Injection mould manufacturer for French clients: ownership, lead times and longevity

A plastic injection mould is a long-term industrial investment. It must endure hundreds of thousands, even millions of cycles. Its quality directly determines the quality of every part produced. Yet many French companies find their mould is in China, technically belongs to their supplier, and cannot be modified without shipping the tool to the other side of the world. At Moulding Injection, we build hardened-steel moulds, they are your exclusive property, and they stay in our Belgian workshop 45 minutes from Lille.

The mould: your property, not the supplier's

The first question to ask any plastic injection supplier is: who owns the mould? With some Asian subcontractors, the mould is treated as supplier property, or held in their plant as security for future orders. At Moulding Injection, the mould is yours from the first payment. You can retrieve it, transfer it, have it modified. It is your industrial tool.

This ownership is documented in the contract, with the tool serial number, photographs, and a condition report. If you change injection supplier, your mould goes with you.

Hardened steel, European précision: what a Moulding Injection mould contains

A plastic injection mould is not a casting die. It is a précision instrument. Tolerances are in the order of a tenth or hundredth of a millimetre. Steel quality, heat treatment, and cavity surface machining determine the quality of every part produced throughout the mould's life.

Our moulds are made in tool steel (P20, H13, 1.2311, 1.2344 depending on application), heat-treated to appropriate hardness, machined on 3-axis and 5-axis CNC machining centres. The cavity surface is ground and polished to the roughness level required by the final part.

Standard cavities are sized for 500,000 to 1,000,000 cycles without major intervention. High-résistance steels (treated H13) allow longer mould life for extended séries.

Standard lead time: 6 to 8 weeks for a simple to medium mould

Injection mould manufacturing lead time depends on complexity:

Simple mould (1 cavity, no undercuts): 4 to 6 weeks.

Medium mould (2 to 4 cavities, slides, inserts): 6 to 8 weeks.

Complex mould (multi-cavity, hot runners, two-shot): 8 to 12 weeks.

These lead times include: design study and validation with LGR Design Studio, tooling manufacture, first shot trial (T1), corrections and validation trial (T2). Lead time from order to first production part is therefore 6 to 10 weeks depending on complexity.

LGR Design Studio: mould optimisation before manufacturing

Most mould problems are solved on screen, before a single part is made. Our partner LGR Design Studio analyses your 3D file and identifies: non-drafted zones (which will prevent éjection), excessive wall thicknesses (sink marks), poorly positioned parting lines (visible flash), and géométries incompatible with plastic flow.

This feasibility analysis is included in our standard process. It avoids costly rework after mould manufacture. A correctly designed mould from the start is a cheaper mould over its total life.

Maintenance and modifications: handled in-house in Ath

A plastic injection mould is not a consumable. It requires maintenance. Over time, certain areas wear, dimensions drift, inserts crack. At Moulding Injection, preventive and corrective maintenance is carried out in our mechanical workshop in Ath.

Common types of intervention:

Cavity surface polishing (loss of gloss, micro-scratches).

Replacement of worn or broken inserts.

Dimensional modification (adding or removing material by machining).

Addition of extra cavities (increasing production rate).

Adaptation for material change (tolerances, cooling circuits).

These interventions are carried out without shipping the mould to Asia, without weeks of downtime, and without intermediaries.

Longevity vs China import: what you do not see in the quote

An Asian mould quote can look attractive. You need to add the hidden costs:

International freight both ways (required for every modification).

Production stoppage during transport (4 to 8 weeks).

Quality revalidation after every modification.

Non-conformity risk with no effective legal recourse.

Loss of IP (intellectual property) control over part geometry.

A mould built and maintained in Belgium, documentedly owned by the French client, is a durable industrial infrastructure. It is an asset on your balance sheet, not a dependency on a third party abroad.

ISO 9001:2015 and full tooling traceability

Every mould built in our workshop receives a unique serial number. Its history (manufacture, trials, modifications, maintenance interventions) is documented in our ISO 9001:2015 quality system. You receive the complète tooling file: drawings, trial reports, mould life sheet.

For sectors subject to traceability requirements (medtech, automotive, electronic devices), this documentation is a contractual condition we meet.

Sectors: automotive, medtech, industry, consumer goods

We build moulds for parts destined for automotive (Tier 2/3 technical plastics), médical (non-implantable devices, sterile packaging), industry (housings, connectors, précision parts) and consumer goods (sanitary products, retail, packaging).

Our experience covers technical materials (PA, PC, POM, PPS) as well as consumer-grade materials (PP, ABS, PE). Each application has specific constraints of shrinkage, sink marks and tolerances that our technicians integrate from the outset.

Request your free feasibility analysis

Send us your 3D file (STEP or IGES preferred) and your spécifications: target material, dimensional tolerance, planned annual production volume, surface constraints (gloss, texture, logo). We respond with a feasibility analysis and tooling estimate within 5 working days.

FAQ

Does the injection mould really belong to me from the order?

Yes. At Moulding Injection, the mould is your exclusive property from the first payment. It is documented by a contract with serial number, photographs and condition report. If you change injection supplier, you retrieve your tooling.

What is the lead time to manufacture an injection mould from France?

Standard lead time is 6 to 8 weeks for a simple to medium mould (1 to 4 cavities). This includes design study, manufacture, T1 and T2 trials. The first production part is therefore available 6 to 10 weeks after order.

What happens if a modification is needed after mould delivery?

Modifications (adding material, machining, insert change) are carried out in our mechanical workshop in Ath, without sending the mould to Asia. Lead time for a standard modification is generally 1 to 2 weeks. No extended production stoppage.

How many cycles can a Moulding Injection mould withstand?

Standard cavities hold 500,000 to 1,000,000 cycles without major intervention. High-résistance steels (treated H13) allow longer lives for extended séries. Actual life depends on injected material, production rate, and preventive maintenance.

Why is a European mould preferable to a Chinese mould for a French client?

Three main reasons: clear and retrievable legal ownership, maintenance and modification without international shipping, and full traceability compliant with European requirements (ISO 9001, REACH, etc.). The mould remains 45 minutes from Lille, accessible for a control visit at any time.
