Limescale clogs the micro-holes of a shower head within a few months. The spray turns uneven, pressure drops, water jets off to the side. You scrub it with vinegar, it helps for a while, then you buy a new head. Anti-limescale (or hard-water) shower heads promise to fix this. In practice, not every technology delivers. Here is what actually works, how it is made, and the criteria to check before buying or launching your own product line.
The 3 common anti-limescale technologies (and what they really deliver)
Under the anti-limescale label sit three families of solutions that do not work the same way at all.
Soft silicone nubs. The outlet face of the shower head carries nubs in silicone (soft material) injected by 2K overmoulding. Limescale builds up and dries, but a simple wipe of the thumb breaks it off. This is the most common solution in DIY retail (Leroy Merlin, Castorama, Brico Dépôt), the simplest, the most durable, and the one that consistently tops consumer tests.
Cartridge filters. A filter cartridge (mineral beads, activated carbon or KDF) sits inside the head to catch some limescale before it deposits. Effective on the outlet water, but the cartridge saturates and needs regular replacement. Recurring cost, demanding upkeep. Good for very hard water, average for general use.
Magnetic and electromagnetic devices. A magnet or coil that is supposed to alter the properties of limescale. Independent testing (UFC Que Choisir, 60 Millions de Consommateurs in France) disputes the evidence. We do not recommend manufacturing these without validated studies.
Why silicone nubs dominate DIY retail
Three concrete reasons explain why Leroy Merlin and Castorama stock almost exclusively silicone-nub shower heads:
Zero maintenance for the user. No cartridge to replace, no consumable to rebuy. The customer runs a thumb across the head once a month.
Visible efficacy. Limescale on a soft nub cracks and falls off under the finger. The customer sees the demo in store (often a test head on the display panel).
Regulatory fit. Food-grade silicone is certified ACS for drinking-water contact in France. No risk of filter material leaching into the water.
How a silicone-nub shower head is actually made
A good anti-limescale shower head with silicone nubs is not a shower head onto which nubs have been stuck. It is a part injected in two materials that chemically fuse. That is the real industrial challenge.
Two-shot (2K) injection happens in two steps inside the same mould: first injection of the rigid body in polycarbonate (PC) or ABS, mould rotation, second injection of liquid silicone rubber (LSR) directly onto the rigid body. The two materials bond chemically - no glue, no seal.
⚠️ Warning: many low-cost shower heads are produced with silicone nubs glued or crimped on after injection. The result shows within 6 months: nubs fall off one by one, water leaks through the gaps, the head is dead. Demand genuine 2K injection, traceable on the data sheet.
LSR silicone has three properties critical for this use: softness (for the anti-limescale wipe), thermal resistance (hot water does not degrade it) and chemical bonding onto PC or ABS (permanent molecular bond).
5 criteria of a good anti-limescale shower head
Before you buy or launch your own private-label product, verify the following:
1. Two-shot injection, not glued nubs. It shows: no sharp separation line between body and nubs.
2. ACS (France), KTW (Germany) or WRAS (United Kingdom) certification. Mandatory if you sell in those markets.
3. Rheological spray study. A good anti-limescale head keeps perceived pressure at reduced flow (water saving). Channel geometry is calculated, not empirical.
4. Galvanic chrome on an ABS ring for retail finish. Chrome that lasts bonds only on ABS, never directly on PC.
5. Batch traceability. A printed batch number lets you identify the production run if an issue arises.
What consumer-press testing says
In France, two outlets come up in almost every search: UFC Que Choisir and 60 Millions de Consommateurs. Both land on the same conclusion: silicone-nub heads really work, magnetic devices stay contested. Rankings vary mostly on ergonomics (weight, grip, looks), not on anti-limescale efficacy itself. For a brand launching a product: focus on 2K quality and ergonomics. Technical efficacy will not differentiate you - it is table stakes.
Our know-how: 2K PC plus LSR for sanitary brands
We manufacture complete anti-limescale shower heads for French brands distributed in mass retail. Our scope: 2K design, hardened-steel mould with two positions, PC or ABS injection for the body, LSR injection for the nubs, galvanic chrome on the ring, assembly, unit QC, retail packaging.
Our tip: on a 2K part, the geometry of the body/nub interface drives product lifetime. A flat interface gives brittle adhesion. A conical groove interface gives mechanical anchoring on top of the chemical bond. Result: zero nub detachment across the product life.

FAQ
Is an anti-limescale shower head with silicone nubs really effective?
Yes, for day-to-day upkeep. The soft nubs let you break deposited limescale with a thumb wipe. It does not treat the water (limescale still passes through), it prevents clogging and spray degradation.
What is the difference between an anti-limescale and a standard shower head?
An anti-limescale head carries a specific technology (2K-injected silicone nubs, cartridge filter or other) to prevent or neutralise limescale build-up. A standard head lets limescale clog the holes within months.
Can anti-limescale shower heads be manufactured in France or Belgium?
Yes. We produce 2K injection (PC plus LSR silicone), galvanic chrome, assembly and retail packaging for French brands distributed in mass retail. Typical runs from 10,000 units.
From what volume does custom production become relevant?
From around 10,000 units per season, dedicated European production becomes competitive once the hidden costs of imports are accounted for (ACS revalidation, logistics, quality risk). Below that, white-label heads are available on the market.
Are silicone-nub shower heads endorsed by French consumer publications?
French independent testing (UFC Que Choisir, 60 Millions de Consommateurs) acknowledges that silicone-nub heads deliver real anti-limescale efficacy. Rankings between models hinge mostly on ergonomics, design and spray performance, not on the anti-limescale technology itself.
