The PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) now frames every package placed on the EU market. If you buy injection moulded packaging parts, jars, caps, closures, trays, it will reach your specification well before the official deadlines. Here is what changes concretely, seen from an injection workshop.
What the PPWR requires, in useful summary
Three directions towards 2030-2040: reduce packaging weight and volume, make packaging recyclable in practice, and incorporate minimum recycled content. In parallel, EU regulation 2025/351 tightens requirements on food contact plastics. The consequence for buyers: compliance is no longer fixed at the end of a project. It is decided at part design and material choice, before the mould is machined.
Recyclable in practice, for a moulded part
A mono-material PP or PET part recycles well. Trouble starts with inseparable assemblies: incompatible bi-material combinations, non-removable metal inserts, decoration that contaminates sorting streams. Design reflex: mono-material whenever the function allows, and when a second material is essential, a pair compatible with the main material's recycling stream. Our partner LGR Design Studio checks this systematically in the DfM analysis; the topic connects with our overmoulding guide.
Recycled material becomes a sourcing question
Recycled content is turning from marketing into a quantified requirement, while the European recycling industry goes through a rough patch: plants closing, cheap imported virgin resin undercutting local regrind, and the ban on plastic waste exports outside the OECD from late 2026 reshuffling flows. Translation: secure traceable recycled material early and validate its behaviour on your real part, not on a datasheet.
How we approach the PPWR at Moulding Injection
Our ground is the injection moulded packaging part in small and medium series: packaging, caps and closures, technical components. The feasibility analysis with LGR includes eco-design (mono-material, weight reduction), and we mould recycled grades when the specification allows, as explained on our eco-friendly injection page. Send your 3D file: feedback within 48h, compliance sticking points included.
