Mineral Shower: shower head made in Europe

Getting a shower head onto the shelves of Leroy Merlin or Castorama is not just about injecting a plastic body. It means delivering a finished product - chromed, assembled, filled, sealed, packaged with leaflet and barcode, ready to scan at checkout. Half of retail failures come from here: the manufacturer injected correctly, but the assembly, chroming or packaging was subcontracted in a rush. Here is how we industrialised the Mineral Shower head for Change Your Life, from the plastic pellet to the delivered blister.

The starting point: a filtering shower head designed by Change Your Life in France

Change Your Life, a French eco-sanitary brand, wanted to produce a filtering shower head with mineral beads, designed to improve water quality while reducing consumption. The design was French, the promise ecological, but the first production quote came from Asia. Long lead times, a first prototype that failed ACS compliance, and no visibility on the supply chain. The brand contacted us to manufacture the product in Europe and enter the Leroy Merlin and Castorama networks.

What we actually make on a Mineral Shower unit

A Mineral Shower run of 20,000 units combines seven successive operations, all handled in-house:

Injection of the polycarbonate body (transparency, impact resistance, ACS compatibility). Injection of the ABS ring (far better chrome adhesion than PC). Galvanic chroming of the ABS ring (premium retail finish). Filling of the filtering bead tubes. Silicone seal fitted between body and ring for mains-pressure tightness. Screwing and final assembly on a dedicated station, with controlled torque on every unit. Retail packaging: blister, EAN barcode, multilingual leaflet, batch number.

The product leaves our site ready to ship directly to the Leroy Merlin warehouse. No middleman. No loss of quality.

Why two materials: PC and ABS

A shower head is not single-material. The body is polycarbonate for impact resistance (it falls in the shower) and to tolerate partial transparency over the filtering beads. The decorative ring is ABS because ABS bonds infinitely better with galvanic deposition than PC does.

⚠️ Warning: some competitors chrome directly on PC. The chrome holds poorly, flakes after a few months, the customer files a warranty claim, the retailer pulls the reference. PC body plus chromed ABS ring is the right architecture for a durable product in mass retail.

Chroming: the finish that makes or breaks the product

The ABS ring is sent to a galvanic bath: degreasing, chemical etching (to create micro-anchoring on the ABS), copper, nickel, chrome. Every step is controlled. One defect means scrap. Our European galvanic partner uses dedicated sanitary baths with no contamination of ACS migration compliance.

Our tip: on a shower head, chrome does not have to be 100% uniform on surfaces invisible in use. We design the ring so that the galvanic anchoring points fall on hidden areas. Result: chroming scrap divided by 3 compared with a fully chromed ring.

Filling the filtering bead tubes

The functional core of the product. The filtering beads sit in a transparent tube housed inside the PC body. Weighed counting station, cap sealed by ultrasonic welding, sealing guaranteed for the product's entire life. No leak, no bead loss across the series.

Why not Asia

Many French brands start in Asia for the catalogue price. Then they discover what is not on the data sheet: ACS revalidation on every supplier change (6 to 8 months), containers stuck in port and a season lost on the shelf, no recovery on a non-compliant batch (10 weeks round-trip before fixing), and loss of quality control on the critical sub-steps (chroming, bead filling). With production in France and Belgium, the chain is auditable in 48 hours. A quality issue, and we are on site.

Our just-in-time setup for retail

DIY retailers order against sell-out, not in advance. Our Kanban setup lets us produce in batches of 20,000 units, ship to Leroy Merlin and Castorama within 3 weeks of the go-ahead, and hold a calibrated buffer to absorb seasonal peaks (spring, father's day, end of year).

Retail constraints most brands underestimate

Manufacturing for a DIY chain means accepting four demands that direct or e-commerce sales do not enforce as hard. ACS compliance mandatory for any product in contact with drinking water in France since 24 December 2006. Consistent quality at scale: on a shelf, not one unit may have a burr, a biased spray, a poorly toleranced thread. Packaging and traceability: EAN barcode, multilingual leaflet, drop-test-resistant blister, printed batch number. Replenishment flow: ship 2,000 units in 2 weeks or 20,000 in 2 months, with no dead stock.

FAQ

Do you handle only the injection, or the finished product?

The finished product. We handle injection, chroming, assembly, filling, unit QC and retail packaging.

How many operators for a 20,000-unit shower-head run?

A dedicated line: assembly station, screwing station, packaging station. Takt set over 2 to 3 weeks per 20,000-unit batch.

Which sanitary standards do you cover?

ACS (France), KTW (Germany), WRAS (United Kingdom). Approved partner labs for migration testing.

Why ABS for the ring and not PC chromed all over?

Galvanic deposition bonds properly on ABS but not on PC. PC chromed directly flakes within a few months.

From what volume does European manufacturing pay off?

As soon as you target a European retail network with seasonal refresh. At 10,000 units per season, Europe wins on TCO once normative revalidations and logistics risks are accounted for.
