PA66 Technical Ring for Lighting
This project involved moulding precision retaining rings in PA66-GF30 (30% glass-fibre reinforced nylon) for LED lighting fixtures. The rings require tight roundness tolerances (±0.1mm), consistent snap-fit engagement force, and UL94 V-0 flame rating for electrical enclosure compliance.

Glass-fibre reinforced PA66 provides the unique combination of properties required: high stiffness (flexural modulus 9 GPa), heat resistance (HDT 250°C at 1.8 MPa), dimensional stability, and inherent flame retardancy. The 30% glass fibre content eliminates the creep that would cause snap-fit relaxation over time in unfilled PA66.
Mould Design
The ring mould uses a 3-plate design with submarine gates positioned to minimise glass fibre orientation effects on roundness. Conformal cooling in the core ensures symmetric shrinkage. The mould produces 8 rings per cycle with automatic degating.
Process Challenges
PA66-GF30 requires high mould temperatures (80-120°C) for complete crystallisation and optimal mechanical properties. Material must be dried to <0.1% moisture to prevent hydrolytic degradation. We use a dedicated PA processing cell with dehumidifying dryers and nitrogen blanket barrel purging.
Quality
100% roundness inspection via automated gauge station. Snap-fit engagement force tested on statistical sample. Flame testing per UL94. ISO 9001:2015 certified production with full material traceability.
