Kino Bikes designs the Bolide, an electric longtail cargo bike built for families: two adults and two children, shopping, a basket, and a layout that changes with the day.
For this modular system, we produce two key parts in injection-moulded ABS: the block that holds the seats and the lock cover.
The project: a bike that changes layout in one click
The Bolide switches from a child seat to a bench, from a basket to a passenger seat. It all relies on a seat exchange system that has to lock without play, withstand road vibration and carry passengers every day.
Our two parts sit at the heart of that mechanism:
- the block (about 215 mm long), which receives and guides the different seats, with its reinforcing ribs and screw bosses;
- the lock cover, which protects the locking mechanism and finishes the assembly.
Why ABS
ABS plastic is a natural choice for an e-bike part used every day:
- it is rigid and impact resistant, even in the cold;
- it holds its dimensions, which matters for precise locking;
- it gives a clean black surface finish without paint;
- it screws and assembles easily, thanks to bosses moulded into the part.
Parts designed for injection moulding
A structural plastic part must be stiff without being solid. The block is cored out and reinforced with ribs: less material, shorter cooling, no warping, and a lighter part on the bike.
Screw bosses, walls and shoulders come straight out of the mould. No machining: the part goes to assembly as it is.
The brief for an e-bike part
A plastic part on a cargo bike does not live an easy life. It takes rain, kerbs, children climbing on board. The brief came down to a few points:
- carry the passengers’ weight transmitted by the seats without flexing;
- lock without play, so no seat moves or rattles on the road;
- stay clean and sharp in black, as a visible part on a design-led bike;
- assemble quickly in the workshop, with no rework.
Spare parts always available
A family longtail cargo bike covers thousands of kilometres. With a dedicated mould, Kino Bikes can restart production whenever needed, for new bikes and for e-bike spare parts for existing riders. The brand keeps control of its parts, their quality and their availability.
A long-standing collaboration
We have worked with the team since the brand was still called Watt Ebike. The bike has evolved, the parts too, and the approach stays the same: solid parts, delivered fast, with one contact who knows the project.
